Description

Narrowly escaping from the band of beastmen we finally returned back to our employer in the city. What our employer wanted wasn't the merchant but what he had on him; a merchant's guild medallion. One that grants him extra benefits and privileges for his trading profession. After everything was settled we returned back to the Red Moon Inn exhausted and bruised. When morning came, there was a small knock on my inn room's door. It was a courier from our employer requesting our presence in the inn's dining hall. With everyone assembled at the table our employer tasked us with a job of protecting a few of his wagons loaded with trade goods for the next city along with his son who will be representing his company. He tells us that this task will be underway seven days from now. We agreed and he bid us farewell.

With his departure from the table we had our own meeting as to what we would do during these seven days. The best suggestion was to check the bounty board to earn some coin for extra supplies for our journey. As we were gazing over the bounty board it felt like someone was watching us. Peering around I saw nothing out of the ordinary and shook off the notion. Upon reading the board one of the tasks was for information leading to recovering a stolen tome from the auction house. Another was for exterminating rats in the sewer. But the one that stood out the most was for an investigation of possible signs of grave robbers at a graveyard on the outskirts of the city. With having no clue about a book and not wanting to smell like a sewer, it was quite clear which one to take and the reward wasn't half bad either.

We head out the eastern gate of the city towards the graveyard but not before having a knight covered head to toe in ornate black armor approach us. He asks if he could assist us on this task and that he has no need for the reward only to consecrate what's been desecrated, if it's been desecrated. Unanimously we agreed and pressed on. By the time we were close to our destination the sun was starting to set and a light, low fog was appearing at our feet. In the distance we saw the graveyard along with a soft orange glow. As we grew closer the orange glow was a lantern held by a man who happened to be the grave keeper and who alerted the city guard to the possible tampering of the grave site. After some questioning we start investigating anything out of the ordinary with the knight as our guide.

The fog grew thicker as we went deeper into the graveyard. Examining grave after grave there was nothing out of the ordinary until out of the corner of my eye I saw a sickly green glow appear. Before I could say anything the knight says, "I knew it, it's him!". Right at that moment a loud, sharp scream came from the direction of the grave keeper and then went dead silent. We started to run towards where the scream erupted from and in that instant the ground started rumbling followed by raspy moans. One by one human silhouettes rose from the fog and within moments we were surrounded. While pointing in the direction of the flickering green light, the knight in a low and commanding voice growls, "At all costs, get to that candle and destroy it!". A hooded figure appears behind the newly risen army and makes a taunting gesture at the knight before slinking back into the fog. The knight makes one final command towards us, "You have your task and whatever you do, do not follow me! This one is mine!". With that stated, he cuts a path through the undead wall and he too disappears into the fog after the hooded figure.

With the undead creeping closer we steady our nerves and focus on our objective and staying alive. The dwarf takes first swing with his hammer into the knee's of one while following up with a shield bash to another and finishing the combo with a downward swing onto the head of his first target that cleaved the head right off. The shadow mage uses the opportunity to fire a shadow bolt through an undead while the high elf and I follow suit. And though we were quickly dispatching them, we were becoming fatigued as well. We continued inching closer and closer to the candle even with them seemingly to have inexhaustible numbers. An undead lunged at the halfling shadow mage and with him being too tired to dodge he was grappled and at the same time three jumped onto the high elf and slowly pulling him to the ground while he was trying to fight them off. With only the dwarf and I left able to do anything, we used the last of our strength to push through the last line of defense.  Just as I used all I had left to hit an undead with a haymaker, the dwarf sprinted passed me and using one final swing of his hammer to finally smash the black candle. Right when the candle went out the undead that surrounded us started slumping to the ground as whatever magic that was animating them started leaving their corpses and disappearing into the sky.

To Be Continued!

Not really my thing to post such a long description, but I thought it was warranted to help highlight the story my friends and I are experiencing in our D&D world. I'm not much of a writer, I only pretend to be one! But I do hope it's adequate enough to get the gist of the story across for those interested in reading it. If not, no big deal!

Here's the first one of the story if interested: lsdrake.deviantart.com/art/D-a…
